‘Bubby,’ a three-legged cat, forms a deep bond with a Canadian family

It’s great to have Bubby’s forever home now after years on his own. Two wonderful families have loved Bubby despite having led a difficult life. The story of Baby begins in 2012 after he was adopted by rescue volunteer Sarah MacLeod. He was found in Boyd Abbott’s kitchen in central Newfoundland. The three-legged visitor surprised Abbott as he was putting food out for another stray cat. In a Facebook post, MacLeod describes how he built a friendship with a three-legged cat on that fateful day. 

Abbott’s cat began visiting his house on a regular basis. In the post, it states that “his visits increased, and soon he had his own chair, china, and was given the name Bubby.” Abbott wanted to keep Bubby permanently, but bubby always wanted to wander outdoors.

Abbott and Bubby developed a special relationship over the next five years. MacLeod says in the post that he wasn’t a trusting individual by nature, but he bonded with the man. ABC reported that Abbott’s daughter, Rhonda Wiseman, said her father woke up every morning thinking about Bubby.

A tragic incident in 2017 led to Abbott’s death. He wanted Bubby to be taken care of by his family. Unfortunately, Bubby visited once and then never returned to the house after he died.

 

Bubby’s Happily Ever After

Two years after Abbott’s death, we know little about Bubby’s story. In 2019, the orange cat was spotted loitering around his house once again. The cat lover Ray Pinsent, who noticed that Bubby was slower and had a hard time surviving on his own, set out to catch him.

Macleod was volunteering at Exploits Valley SPCA, where Pinsent took Bubby in December 2020. A bad winter storm left Bubby dehydrated and weak, according to the group’s Facebook post. It was likely he wouldn’t survive the next storm, so the shelter started him on the road to recovery.

MacLeod’s bond with Bubby reminded Wiseman of her father’s relationship with the cat, which also blossomed with MacLeod. Bubby was taken to the shelter to be treated for his injuries, but once he was well, they decided she should be fostered by MacLeod, far away from the rescue. MacLeod’s boyfriend also quickly warmed up to him.

A golden-year-old cat enjoys his new home and his new parents’ care now that he is in his golden years. A happy ending is made even better by Wiseman’s continued visits to Bubby.
